A Thai student has died from swine flu in the resort island of Phuket, one of two more deaths from the virus in the kingdom to take the toll to 11, health authorities said on Wednesday. The 19-year-old man, originally from the southern province of Pattalung, was treated at a hospital in the southern island and died on July 3, Deputy Health Minister Manit Nopamornbodi said.
On Monday, a 21-year-old woman who was five months pregnant also died in a Bangkok hospital from the A(H1N1) virus, he said. “The woman had hyperthyroidism while the man also suffered from pneumonia,” Manit told AFP. He also confirmed another new 290 cases of swine flu, bringing Thailand’s total to 2 718. Of those, 110 were treated at hospitals.
More than 94 500 cases of swine flu have been confirmed worldwide and the virus has caused more than 425 deaths, according to the World Health Organization. The latest figures showed the countries with the most deaths were the United States and Mexico, with tolls of 170 and 119 respectively.
