The Director of Thalang National Museum, Atchima Nookhong, announced that the second-annual Phuket Traditional Costumes Contest will be held on August 8, from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. located at the museum itself.
Through this event, Ms. Atchima says that the traditional costumes could show the cultural identities of Phuket people and displaying the diversity of native live on the island for a long time.

“Globalization has brought about modern cultural trends and caused the newer generations to ignore the beauty of their native culture. This contest is targeting the newer generation for them to educate and encourage the preservation of Phuket beautiful cultures,” Ms. Atchima said.

Part of the project is the ongoing Phuket’s traditional costumes exhibition at the museum, which wraps up at the end of the month. The exhibits can be viewed daily from 9am to 4:30pm.

The costume contest accepts both male and female contestants, who will compete in four age groups: 7 to 15 years old, 16 to 30 years old, 31 to 45 years old and 46 and up. The group winners will be awarded 3,000 baht each for first place, 2,000 baht for second place and 1,000 baht for third place.

Thalang National Museum officer Patcharee Sripoka told the Gazette, “We’d like to invite all people, both locals and visitors, to take part in this event. They won’t only enjoy the beauty of the costumes but they can also see the diversity of Phuket cultures.”
